Celebrex
has been associated with significant side effects, including
heart attacks and strokes. Recent concerns about cardiovascular
problems linked to Celebrex have led the FDA to recommend
that doctors consider alternatives to the popular arthritis
drug. The FDA has not yet decided whether it will force a
Celebrex recall. Pfizer is resisting the withdrawal of the
drug.
The FDA issued a warning to doctors and patients
saying that the agency is concerned about the safety of Celebrex
and other popular arthritis drugs (including Vioxx
and Bextra).
The National Cancer Institute recently completed
a study that indicated alarming results:
Patients taking 400mg were 2.5 times more
likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke
Patients taking 800mg were 3.4 times more
likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke.
Pfizer immediately dismissed the results of
this study (which the company itself funded), saying that
the data is inconsistent with results from other clinical
studies.
